The stated goal is always the same: safety. Prevent violence. Identify threats early. Protect children.
And here’s the uncomfortable truth: it sounds reasonable. That’s exactly why it’s dangerous.
Because what’s happening in these schools isn’t just about preventing the next tragedy. It’s about normalizing a way of living where being watched is the baseline, not the exception. Where privacy isn’t a right you grow into, but a luxury you may never learn to expect.
The shift didn’t happen all at once. It crept in through layers of fear and technology. After every school shooting, there was a renewed urgency—something must be done. Metal detectors. Armed guards. Locked doors. Then came software: monitoring student emails, scanning Google Docs for keywords, flagging phrases like “depressed,” “angry,” or worse.
Now it’s escalated. Cameras don’t just record; they interpret. Algorithms don’t just store data; they judge it.
And the kids sitting in those classrooms? They’re not being asked.
There’s a particular kind of silence that settles in when people accept surveillance as normal. It’s not loud, not dramatic. It’s subtle. A hesitation before speaking. And the algorithm? It has no accountability. It doesn’t explain itself. It doesn’t apologize.

There’s a difference between protection and control, and the line between them can blur when technology is involved. A locked door protects. A system that watches every movement, analyzes every word, and stores every interaction begins to control.
And control has a way of extending itself.
The infrastructure being built in schools doesn’t stay in schools. The companies developing these systems are not designing them for one use case. They’re building platforms—adaptable, scalable, transferable.
Today it’s classrooms. Tomorrow it’s workplaces, public spaces, maybe entire cities.
If a generation grows up accepting constant monitoring as normal, there will be little resistance when those same systems appear elsewhere. Why question something you’ve always known?
That’s the long-term consequence, and it’s not theoretical. It’s cultural.
There’s also something else at stake, something harder to quantify but just as important: trust.
Education is supposed to be a relationship. Between students and teachers. Between curiosity and knowledge. Between questioning and understanding.

Supporters of these systems argue that students are already used to surveillance. They carry smartphones. They use social media. They live in a digital world where data is constantly collected.
But that argument misses something fundamental.
There’s a difference between choosing to participate in a system and being subjected to one. A student can log off social media. They can delete an app. They can, at least in theory, opt out.
They cannot opt out of school.
Compulsory environments carry a higher responsibility. When attendance is mandatory, so is the obligation to respect the rights of those inside.
And privacy is one of those rights.
The conversation around school surveillance often gets framed as a trade-off: privacy versus safety. But that framing is too simple, and it’s misleading.
It suggests that more surveillance automatically means more safety, which isn’t necessarily true. Technology can identify patterns, but it cannot replace human relationships. It can flag behavior, but it cannot understand it.

And they raise a question that should be central but often isn’t: who bears the burden of error?
It’s not the company that built the system. It’s not the administrator who approved it. It’s the student whose life is disrupted by a mistake.
That imbalance should make us pause.
But pausing is not what’s happening. Expansion is.
Federal and state funding streams are increasingly open to “school safety technology.” Vendors are eager. Districts are under pressure. The ecosystem is aligned toward growth.
And once these systems are in place, they are difficult to remove. Contracts are long-term. Infrastructure is embedded. Expectations shift.
Surveillance, once normalized, becomes sticky.
So what do you do with all of this, if you’re not a policymaker or a superintendent or a tech executive?
You start by paying attention.
Ask your school district what systems are in place. Ask what data is being collected, how it’s stored, who has access, and how long it’s kept. Ask how often the system makes mistakes and what happens when it does.
These are not technical questions. They’re civic ones.
You also resist the urge to accept “safety” as a complete answer. Safety is important. It matters. But it’s not self-justifying. It doesn’t automatically override every other consideration.
A system can be well-intentioned and still be harmful. It can be effective in one way and damaging in another.
Those trade-offs deserve scrutiny.
And finally, you remember that normalization is a process, not an event.
The camera in the classroom didn’t appear overnight. It arrived through a series of decisions, each one small enough to seem reasonable on its own.
That’s how systems of control often develop—not through a single dramatic shift, but through accumulation.
Which means they can also be questioned the same way: one decision at a time.
There’s still a window, right now, where this isn’t fully settled. Where policies are being written, contracts are being signed, and norms are still forming.
That window won’t stay open forever.
