France ready to summon US ambassador over far right comments

According to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, US Ambassador Charles Kushner will be summoned in response to the US embassy's recent statements regarding the murder of a far-right French activist in Lyon, a city located in the southeastern region of France, earlier this month.

On Sunday, Barrot informed the French newspaper Le Monde and public broadcasters France Inter and France Info that he intended to summon the United States ambassador to France due to the US embassy's commentary on the tragedy, which affects the national community.

He further stated, "We are opposed to any attempt to exploit this tragedy for political gain."

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs did not specify the date on which Kushner, the father of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, would be summoned.

The murder of Quentin Deranque, 23, has underscored the political tensions that lie ahead of the presidential election next year.

On Saturday, President Emmanuel Macron, who is not eligible to compete for reelection due to term limits, issued a call for tranquility as approximately 3,000 individuals participated in a march in Lyon organized by far-right organizations to honor Deranque.

Deranque lost his life due to head injuries sustained during a beating on the outskirts of a demonstration in Lyon on February 12 in protest of a politician from the left-wing France Unbowed (LFI) party.

His death has elicited international responses, with the right-wing administration of US President Donald Trump denouncing the act of "terrorism" in France on Friday.

Sarah Rogers, the undersecretary for public diplomacy at the US Department of State, stated on Friday that Deranque's death demonstrates "the severity with which we regard political violence, or terrorism."

She wrote on X, "Once you choose to kill people for their opinions instead of persuading them, you have opted out of civilization."

The US embassy account shared a post in French by the State Department's bureau of counterterrorism, which stated that "Violent radical leftism is on the rise and its role in Quentin Deranque's death demonstrates the threat it poses to public safety."

Deranque's murder has also sparked a diplomatic dispute between France and Italy, whose right-wing prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, maintains cordial relations with Trump.

She referred to the murder of Deranque as "a wound for all of Europe," which prompted Macron to criticize her for her political commentary on French domestic affairs.

A parliamentary assistant to a far-left MP has also been charged with complicity in the killing, while six individuals suspected of involvement in the fatal assault have been charged.
